The Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) is a member of the leadership team who will work closely with leaders across the health system to help maintain and shape the organization's culture to be one that values diversity, equity and inclusion. The CDO is charged with creating a diverse and inclusive environment for patients, family, staff and providers across Cayuga Health System. The CDO will be at the organizational forefront of developing and implementing strategies that ensures health equ within the health system as well as in the community. Tasked with turning best practices in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion into actionable behaviors, this individual will lead, influence and inspire change at all levels across the system. This leader will be the system expert and community liaison for diversity, equity and inclusion while maintaining a culture of innovation, superior outcomes, and learning.


Job Responsibilities include:


Leadership Competencies

  • Serves as a boundary spanning role in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion across the health system to assist business areas (CMC, SH and CMA) in the implementation of programming to reduce inequities and systemic racism and improve outcomes for all
  • Skilled communicator that effectively communicates with staff, peers and customers
  • Supports the mission, vision and values of Cayuga Health System (CHS)
  • Strives to deliver the highest level of service available
  • Is responsive to staff, provider, patient, family and leadership needs
  • Leads in an ethical manner following all medical center and legal requirements

  • Participates in appropriate meetings and committees to provide subject matter expertise and support
  • Continuously monitors budget, defines variances and implements corrective action to insure efficient cost effective, high quality services.

  • Establishes integrated systems (CMC, SH and CMA) which improve services and support the Health System's mission
  • Develops, tests, implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting the health system goals.

Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements comprehensive plans which promote diverse, inclusive and equitable organizational cultures
  • Facilitates awareness, education, and training for the healthcare team to ensure that all individuals, regardless of social identity, receive respectful and high-value care with cultural humility
  • Addresses diversity, inclusion and equity within the organization, including diversity in recruitment, retention and succession planning
  • Works with hiring teams and search committees to ensure diverse hiring pools
  • Develops diversity dashboards to track metrics and monitor progress
  • Utilizes qualitative and quantitative data to develop programming and education
  • Ensures there is cultural competent curriculum development in educational programs, including staff education and the residency programs, and aligns this with the broader vision and strategy
  • Advocates for digital health as a solution for building patient-centered care and eliminating health disparities
  • Serve as a consultant to units within CHS to create, expand, and implement employee/workplace programs
  • Work with the public relations team and provides oversight for content that assists in communicating relevant information to both internal and external communities
  • Develops community partnerships which can foster health equity and dissect the complexities of the social determinants of health
  • Builds partnerships at a regional and national level which can include those with member associations, legislators, and government authorities

Requirements:

  1. Documented track record of implementing and accomplishing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in a complex organization
  2. Bachelor's degree required; MBA, or other applied advanced degree is preferred
  3. A minimum 5 years of experience leading and advancing diversity and cultural inclusion strategic plan at an executive level is required
  4. Successful record of leading and advancing diversity and cultural inclusion initiatives with a high degree of cultural intelligence
  5. Proven experience in meeting the specific needs of populations chronically underrepresented in health care and a demonstrated history of effective community service and promotion of social justice initiatives
  6. Possess extensive experience in the field of diversity, and the ability to translate expertise into highly effective practical applications
  7. Possess experience with data collection/analyses and research methods, as well as a track record of working with health care and community leaders is crucial
  8. Proven abilities to collaborate and work successfully with multiple constituents in the delivery and coordination of programs and initiatives
  9. Strong written and oral communication skills
  10. Project Management and/or quality improvement training preferred
